AI is one tool for thinking, not the thinker
Writing let us store ideas outside our heads. The printing press copied them at scale. The spreadsheet let us model numbers we could never hold in mind at once. Each one extended what a person could think — and none of them did the thinking. AI is the next entry in that line, not a break from it.
What makes the line continuous is what every tool leaves to you. A spreadsheet recalculates instantly, but it doesn't know which numbers matter or why you're building the model. AI drafts, summarizes, and suggests — yet it still can't tell you the goal you're chasing, decide which trade-off you can live with, or carry the consequences when the call is wrong. That's the point of Augmenting a person beats automating the task: the tool raises your ceiling, but the ceiling is still yours to reach.
These tools also change us. As Tools for thought change what you can think argues, a new instrument reshapes the questions you can even ask — so the skill becomes using it well, not handing it the wheel. The thinker is still you, which is exactly why Delegate the task, keep the judgment.
